The base of the rustic figures is traditionally made in a uniform fashion with corn husks, additional structural support such as bamboo or wood, and some form of natural string or raffia as needed, and non-toxic, compostable glue as needed. It is important that the foundation for the figure is sturdy and will hold up over time. After the initial figure is constructed, the artistic potential for design is limitless. Susan is always experimenting and looking for new materials to use.
An important part of the process includes the artist sustainably gathering and sourcing materials from the environment, including shells, reeds, natural string, naturally colored yarn, flowers, plants to use for dye, animal fibers and domestic feathers, and more.
Special note!...Wild Bird Feathers may never be used and the law prohibits collecting them so as to protect wild birds from being victimized for profit. Domestic feathers are acceptable.
